Top 10 ways to grow your Twitter followers quickly

Why Twitter? Granted that Twitter is facing some issues recently, but it is still one of the top social media platforms for building one’s online reputation or connecting to customers. It is also versatile, suitable for either B2C or B2B businesses.

Usually, there are two ways to increase your twitter followers:

  1. Paid
  2. Unpaid

For the former, it is easy to grow your twitter followers by hundreds in a day. For the latter, it is more challenging. I guess we all like a challenge don’t we?

With 900 over twitter followers, I wouldn’t dare say that I have found the recipe to grow twitter followers quickly. However, depending on your “social currency”, the popularity topics that your account focus on and the frequency of posting, you can grow your twitter followers much faster than I did. Aim to grow at least 100 followers a week and keep that momentum to grow beyond a thousand.

Here’re the top ten ways to grow your twitter followers, tried and tested:

#1 Make sure the basics are done, such as filling out your bio

Besides your tweet, your bio is the other decision factor when someone is deciding whether to follow you. Also, by including relevant keywords on your profile, it enables your twitter profile to be displayed on Twitter’s Suggested Users page and on the search results, when someone search for followers to follow using keywords. Hence, to grow your twitter followers, it is a must to fill up your profile first.

Here’s my bio. I shared my top interests and hashtag them so that I may be more easily found on twitter.

#2 Put links to your Twitter profile everywhere

This is a simple one. It just takes a few minutes of your time to gain more followers. Link your twitter profile to your LinkedIn, Facebook, blog, email signature, and everywhere else you live online. For the email signature, I would keep it simple:

#3 Cross-pollination

Related to #2, this means reposting your tweets on your Facebook, Linkedin etc each time. There is a marketing rule of thumb that a customer needs to see the same message five times before taking action. Hence, posting your tweets at various social media platforms will help you get more eyeballs on your posts and gain more followers.

#4 Follow others first and retweet/ like their posts

This is something simple that you can do daily and achieve a huge impact. I use to find followers to follow as they have features like Copy followers and Keyword follow. To use Copy followers, you simply identify and type in the name of a twitter account with a similar profile as yours and then the crowdfireapp will display all the followers of the account. You can just click the green “+” button on the right to follow these followers.

The Keyword follow feature is similar but this time you enter the hashtags that are relevant to your interests and the crowdfireapp will display the twitters users with those hashtags in their bio. Again, this is why it’s important to fill out your bio!

After following these twitter users, you could also go to their account and like their posts/ interact with them so that that increases the chances of them following you back!

Crowdfireapp also tells you if they follow you back or unfollow you so use that to monitor your followers’ activity. I find it particularly helpful to retain my followers by immediately following back someone who follows me first.

#5 Use hashtags in your tweets

Following #4, it is helpful to use hashtags in your tweets too as that is how non-followers find you on twitter. I realise that one of the fastest ways to grow my twitter followers was to insert relevant hashtags in my twitter message.

#6 Share useful content

Now, you may be asking yourself the question, where do I find useful topics. I find sharing articles and highly shared tweets very helpful in growing twitter followers. One easy hack is to use google alerts to send you relevant articles and then tweet them. I see this as a best practice as I can on one hand, read about the topics I love and on the other hand, build the pipeline of tweets for my followers. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! (punt intended)

#7 Post tweets on trending topics

You may be wondering, how do I know which topics are trending? Simply go to your twitter account and the trending topics will be listed on the left side of your account. Or go to lists the hot ‘trending topics.

Frankly, I don’t use this often as the trending topics tend to be rather general and my twitter account is quite focused. But depending on the focus of your twitter account, it may be relevant for you.

#8 Post your tweets during peak hours

This is a powerful hack. It requires some account monitoring as you may not know when are your existing/potential followers online in the beginning. However, a general rule is to post it during the waking hours of USA as twitter users are mostly based in United States. Of course, if your target customers are based in Asia, then it makes sense to post during the asian time zones.

I use Buffer to store posts that I have planned for the day and schedule them to be posted during breakfast (people read tweets on their way to work), lunch time and evening (when people get off work and read tweets on their way home). When I do A/B testing, I found out that more people like or share my tweets if I post during those timings, compared to outside of those timings.

#9 Share pictures in your tweets

Pictures speak a thousand words. Pictures in tweets are heavily retweeted/spread around. This one from US Airways Flight 1549 has been viewed 1,000,000+ times. For mobile pics, use iPhone apps such as Tweetie or Twitterific, both which support on the go uploading.
